Kitsune are a Japanese mythical beast – a white fox who is the messenger of the goddess Amaterasu. You’ll often see them at Shinto shrines, most famously the Fushimi-Inari shrine in Kyoto, the famous shrine complex with rows and rows of red torii gates that Japan is famous for. I love the masks so much, they feature heavily in a lot of my artwork.
This mask is a cute version of the kitsune masks. It has a hand painted effect, with a beautiful fan behind it, along with bells, cherry blossoms, and bamboo leaves. The design behind it is a mimic of traditional indigo dyed fabric patterns, too, so this one is definitely chock-full of everything Japan. The size of the design is also really nice for a quicker piece to make that is still big enough to make it look stunning on a wall.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit Kyoto once, and I’m hoping to get there again. Travel with me there with this art inspired by it!
