“Flower Cards,” known as “hana-fuda,” are a set of 48 Japanese playing cards, representing the 12 months of the year. They usually have a striking distinct art style and very limited color palette, which is why I love doing illustrations that mimic them.

This card features a Shinto shrine’s red torii gate, and a shrine flanked by two kitsune, the Japanese mythical animal that is a messenger of the goddess Amaterasu. One has a scroll under it’s foot to symbolize the wisdom it brings, and the other a golden ball for prosperity (in the original art, it is a baby fox kit, but that was too hard to draw in pixel, but they both symbolize the same thing).
