“Flower Cards,” known as “hana-fuda,” are a set of 48 Japanese playing cards, representing the 12 months of the year. They usually have a striking distinct art style and very limited color palette, which is why I love doing illustrations that mimic them.

This card is based on the Japanese holiday of “Tsukimi” – literally moon viewing. It is the last full moon in September, and there are lots of festivals and events as it signifies the end of summer and the start of fall in Japan. A lot of places make mochi (pounded rice cakes) as a treat after the rice harvest. The reason for the rabbits is because where westerners see “the man on the moon” or a face, in Japan, they see two bunnies, or one bunny pounding mochi cakes, depending on who you ask. Either way, rabbits are inextricably linked to the moon in Japan, and this flower card design highlights that link.
